Blackburn Creeklands: School Gateway to Nature project

The Blackburn Creekies run a series of Community Working Bees during the planting season.  This year, two of these were devoted to its ‘School Gateway to Nature Project’:   to plant around new access points to Laburnum Primary School (LPS) on the park’s southern boundary in a formerly neglected area of the park.

The project was a runaway success with around 40 people attending and 350 plants going in on each day – including volunteers from the school community – about double the usual number.

Whitehorse Council contractors constructed an access path to the school’s bike shed and Council also assisted in site preparation in advance of both the Sunday working bees.

The Creekies thanked all the participants – especially their new friends from LPS !  The elements of the project will deliver a greened up part of the park (while preserving existing Wallaby Grasses). A convenient and safe new gateway to the school has also been opened with direct access to the bike-shed – great for the kids who “bike it” to school.
