Back Creek rises as a spring on the slopes of the hill at the corner of Canterbury and Elgar Roads in Box Hill (there is a Melbourne Water tower and reservoir on the hill.) It is now piped underground in as far as Union Road, then is open until Cornell Street. It runs in the open again from Camberwell Road to a short distance South of Toorak Road and finally emerges at Dawson Street Glen Iris, about 500m before it joins Gardiners Creek at Nettleton Park.

The Friends of Back Creek are the relevant group and are particularly concerned with the section of the Creek between Riversdale Road and Cornell Street (Melways Map 60 G2).
