Return your nature strip to nature – supporting local biodiversity and healthy waterways!

The Rewilding our Nature Strips program has joined the KooyongKoot Alliance to drive transformation in and around the City of Boroondara – revegetating spaces with drought-tolerant, indigenous plants.
The great news is that there are active groups and resources to help you transform your nature strip into vital biodiversity habitat. Our reimagined green spaces are not only providing environmental benefits. They are forging social connections in our local community.

We also work with similar groups in neighbouring local government areas. Sharing experiences and practices across eastern Melbourne helps to elevate impact across the wider Kooyongkoot catchment – and beyond! For example, see the great work of Highton Rotary in the City of Greater Geelong.

How it Works

- Before you start – apply for a permit from your local Council and check Before You Dig Australia.
- Prepare nature strip – remove existing grass and weeds.
- Lay natural matting if desired to suppress weeds.
- Plant Council-recommended indigenous species.
- Apply a generous layer of bush mulch.
- Enjoy the admiration of your neighbours and friends.

With a donation to KooyongKoot Alliance, the Rewilding our Nature Strips program can provide:
- Advice on getting started.
- Weed matting and range of indigenous plants.
- Advice on establishing and maintaining your indigenous nature strip.
- Join our online community.

Supporting Partners
We are very pleased to receive funding support in 2026 from Community Bank Inner East through its Community Investment Program. These funds will contribute to Rewilding our Nature Strips program costs including indigenous plants sourced from local nurseries. The Community Investment Program has provided over $11m to community groups to date, supporting grassroots projects and local organisations to shape a stronger, more connected Inner East.

The Rewilding our Nature Strips adheres to Boroondara’s Nature Strip Guidelines, December 2025. Council is kindly supporting the Rewilding our Nature Strips program through practical assistance such as the periodic supply of mulch for planted nature strips.
