Gardiners Creek Reserve – 1st 2025 planting

The KooyongKoot Alliance (KKA) hosted another hugely successful planting event at  Gardiners Creek Reserve, Burwood on Sunday, May 18th. We managed to plant over 2,300 plants on the day – including the all-important watering them in.

The newly purchased mechanical auger, courtesy of an Australia Post grant, was worth its weight in gold as the ground was a little dry and hard in places!

As always, the teams from Urban Guerrillas,  Friends of Gardiners Creek Reserve, Australian Conservation Foundation, students from Deakin Uni  PLUS a number of other local and not-so-local organisations and individuals made this happen – as well as Darcy McDonald the Backyard Naturalist

The Friends of Gardiners Creek Reserve’s water trailer was also a major contributor to our success on the day and helped the 60 volunteers to get those important ground story plants into the ground with the help of a dash of water and magic water crystals!!! The plant palette was purposely limited on this occasion to Poa labillardieri, Juncus pallidus, Carex appressa and Dianella tasmanica…..all good hardy plants to support the biodiversity in the site.  The team had a beautifully catered BBQ paid for by Deakin University and cooked by Rotaract. Such a positive, fun day with so many contributors!

Our next KooyongKoot (Gardiners) Creek planting is on the 29th June.

We hope to beat the record 2,300 plants planted in the site a little downstream. Please come down and be part of the transformation.
