Growing Community, One Plant at a Time
Nettleton Park is sited at the confluence of Back Creek and KooyongKoot (Gardiners Creek).
On July 13th, our Back2Nettleton Friends group – proud members of the KooyongKoot Alliance
(KKA) – gathered with thirty cheerful volunteers to plant a whopping 1,000 indigenous grasses,
ground covers, and shrubs around the walking tracks and biodiversity area. That’s right – one
thousand! Together we created new pockets of life for birds, insects, and locals who love a good
stroll through leafy surroundings.

Preparation started early with a splash of colour and creativity. A friend and her children designed a
big, bold WELCOME board for the park entrance. To make everyone feel at home, “Welcome” was
written in eight languages – from Wominjeka, which means “come and be here with purpose” in Woi
Wurrung, through to Cantonese, Hindi, Dutch, and more. It set the tone for a planting day that was
as multicultural as it was muddy.

With gloves on and spades in hand, our volunteers came from near and far – Ashburton, Glen Iris,
Surrey Hills, Box Hill, Mt Waverley, even the CBD. Many had roots in China, India, Holland,
Germany, and, of course, Australia. The shared goal? To dig, laugh, and create something lasting.
Bookings were made through Humanitix, and while numbers were capped at thirty, the enthusiasm
spilled over. Planting quickly became more than just a job – it was an experience, with people
swapping stories, sharing planting tips, and sneaking in the odd muddy high-five.
By day’s end, four large areas were transformed with new greenery, thanks to the plants supplied
by the City of Boroondara and the steady guidance of our planting leader Antony. The result? A
park buzzing with fresh life – and a group of very happy, very muddy people.
And what did our volunteers think?
“Great fun! Thank you!” – Xavier
“So good meeting fantastic volunteers and being out in the fresh air.” – Anon
“Happy times as always.” – Albert
“I’ll be back to check on their growings – watch out!”
Winter might bring grey skies, but at Nettleton Park (Glen Iris) it’s the season for muddy boots, busy hands,
and plenty of laughter. Instead of weeding and tidying, winter gives us the joy of planting – tucking
little green treasures into the soil and letting Mother Nature take over with her recipe of rain,
sunshine, and springtime magic.
Planting day wasn’t just about greenery – it was about community, connection, and joy. And as part
of the wider KKA network, Back2Nettleton Friends are proud to keep building local biodiversity and
strong partnerships. Missed out this time? Don’t worry. There will be plenty more chances to roll up
your sleeves, grab a spade, and grow with us at Nettleton Park.
Thanks to Ruthie for keeping us up to date !
