Camberwell Junction

The Friends of Camberwell Junction is a local initiative to care for and enhance green spaces in the Camberwell Junction precinct.

The group held its inaugural gathering in September at its first-cab-off-the-rank project site at the Avenue Road Reserve (see the purple X on the map above).

The Avenue Road Reserve is a small urban green space behind Camberwell Road from the Camberwell Civic Centre. It is a quiet space in the midst of a busy town centre that is highly valued by residents.   It features mature eucalypt trees, grassed areas and  perimeter garden beds planted with Australian native plants.   The park is adjacent to breeding habitat for White-browed Scrubwrens and Eastern Spinebills.  In future, other locations may be added as they become a priority for action or an activity.

The local Council, the City of Boroondara, is actively supporting the initiative through its local sustainability and tree-planting programs. Both encourage residents to form and join Friends Groups to protect parks and expand tree canopy.

Council’s Tree Canopy Strategy emphasises community partnerships as central to achieving long-term environmental goals, making the launch of Friends of Camberwell Junction timely and aligned with municipal priorities.

Convenor Barbara Wheeler invites residents, workers, and traders with an interest in heritage, ecology, and local green spaces to get involved. For more information, please email: FriendsOfCamberwellJunction@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can reach Barbara on 0493 472 747.

Current projects and activities include:

  • further work at Avenue Road Reserve tending recently plantings – weeding and mulching.
  • next event 2 pm 18/10/2026 at Avenue Road Reserve.
