Friends of Camberwell Junction takes root

Friends of Camberwell Junction takes root at Avenue Road Reserve

A new community environmental group, Friends of Camberwell Junction, held its inaugural gathering in September at Avenue Road Reserve, launching a local initiative to care for and enhance green spaces around the Camberwell Junction precinct.

The group convened in response to roadworks during winter that adversely impacted the park. Participants mulched garden beds and planted native seedlings supplied by the City of Boroondara, demonstrating an immediate, hands-on commitment to re-establish plantings and biodiversity.

The group is being auspiced by the KooyongKoot Alliance, an established network of more than 20 Friends Groups working along the Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) catchment. This partnership provides governance support and links the new group to a broader movement of volunteers engaged in planting, weeding, and community events across Boroondara.

City of Boroondara is actively supporting the initiative through its local sustainability and tree-planting programs, which encourage residents to form and join Friends Groups to protect parks and expand tree canopy. Council’s Tree Canopy Strategy emphasises community partnerships as central to achieving long-term environmental goals, making the launch of Friends of Camberwell Junction timely and aligned with municipal priorities.

Convenor Barbara Wheeler invites residents, workers, and traders with an interest in heritage, ecology, and local green spaces to get involved. For more information, please email: FriendsOfCamberwellJunction@gmail.com.

The next event will be held on Sunday, 18 October at 2 pm at Avenue Road Reserve.
