New Friends Groups

A key objective of the KKA is to support and nurture new Friends and Advisory Groups.

This page focusses upon the new Friends groups that the KKA has already helped getting started. If you would like help with starting a new group, please visit our Setting up a new group page.

Back 2 Nettleton

The Back 2 Nettleton Friends Group formed in 2020 at the height of Covid, a difficult time for many. The group benefited from the network of Friends groups who were able to provide advice, hands on experience and tools for this new group. Through their dynamic leadership, Back 2 Nettleton now has over 50 members and is now a truly well-established group with a bright future. You can find out more about the group here.

The groups has broadened its community network to include:

  • Boroondara Council
  • ACF Malvern
  • St Oswalds Anglican Church
  • Urban Guerrillas
  • Backyard Biodiversity
  • 1st Glen Iris Scouts
  • U3A.

You can find out more about the group here.

Urban Guerrillas

The Urban Guerrillas were formed in 2021 doing “guerrilla revegetation” in a disturbed section of the creek during the Covid outbreak. As a start-up, youth-based, group of environmentalists they benefited from mentorship, support, advice and tools to enable them to grow into a vibrant young group now with over 300 members. They combine hands on planting with information sessions and have several successful projects under their belt and many more in the pipeline. They have broadened their community Network to include:

  • Deakin University
  • Friends of Gardiners Creek Reserve
  • Whitehorse Council
  • Boroondara Council
  • Melbourne Water
  • Yarra RiverKeeper
  • Local Schools

The Creek Beyond the Lake

ACBC at Hill’n’Dale Park

ACBC (Ashburton Creek Biodiversity Crew) is a small and welcoming local Friends group that has been caring for the Hill’n’Dale Park in Glen Iris/Ashburton, controlling weeds and carrying out significant revegetation along the line of the former Ashburton Creek (now channelled underground).

You can find out more about the group here.

Friends of  Wurundjeri Walk

The Friends of  Wurundjeri Walk is the new group active in Wurundjeri Walk, Blackburn South. Formerly, the Wurundjeri Walk Advisory Committee was active in the park for many years. Sadly, that group folded when key members retired or moved away from the area – in combination with the COVID lock-downs which adversely affected volunteering in general.

You can find out more about the group here.
