Back Creek is a tributary of KooyongKoot (Gardiners) Creek.
Saturday 9th August was the major planting event for the Friends of Back Creek-Ferndale revegetation project in Glen Iris. It was a joint KKA effort, with neighbouring groups ACBC and Back 2 Nettleton Friendshelping out, as well as Graham and Vicki on logistics and marketing. The project also enjoyed significant contributions from Boroondara Council and the Morgan BassCare Assisted Living facility as Albert reports:
It was a perfect day for what became to be the most memorable planting event I’ve ever attended.
Not only were we oversubscribed, but we got over 1500 plants into pre watered and crystalled holes over 3 separate sites, before coming back to Morgan BassCare for a chef cooked BBQ, gift bags and a raffle!! at a great entertaining venue.
Special thanks to Craig, Erin, Ilana and the whole team at Morgan BassCare who went all out to create a special day as well as providing all the shrubs for their site.
It was great to have the involvement of the 1st Glen Iris Scouts, Venturers, Cubs and Joeys and the John Gardiner Rovers. They came in big numbers and added energy and joy to the day.
Thank you to the City of Boroondara, who provided plants, water and time through Lyle and the bush crew of Felix Botanica, promotional support as well as the attendance of Deputy Mayor Victor Franko and Councillor Mal Osborne-Smith
The site behind Morgan BassCare is particularly special, as it’s already low traffic and fairly dense – thanks to many years of council, local resident and Scout Group plantings. The addition of 750 shrubs into that space will only improve the cover and we can follow that up again next year with bank holding grasses, which may just be enough to encourage the small native birds back.
Our thanks to Albert T for kindly keeping us up to date on this special project.
